In the video game, <Mass Effect> how can you train your character for a specific weapon?

Are you stuck with the weapons that you are given at the beginning of the game. My Character is a soldier but the only weapons I can use are the pistol and the sniper rifleIn the video game, %26lt;Mass Effect%26gt; how can you train your character for a specific weapon?
The soldier can use all weapons aside from amps and omni-tools if you count those. To unlock other weapons you need to put 6 points or so in to the primary weapon skill. For shotguns I think it's 6 points in pistols and for sniper rifles it's the same only you put 6 points in assault rifles. All of the other classes are limited in the weapons they can use just so you know in the future.
