Will Mass Effect 3 be the last Mass Effect or will it become like halo and start making prequels?

Mass Effect is my favorite video game series and I'm really pumped for Mass Effect 3. But I also feel sad knowing it might be the last one.



So I was wondering if it will really be the last one. Like they said Halo 3 was going to be the last Halo but then they made Wars and Reach which are prequels without Master Chief. Will they do the same thing will Mass Effect only without Commander Shepard?



I for one am hoping they make Mass Effect prequel games based on the books. Like I hope they make Mass Effect: Revelation a game and get to play as Captain Anderson just like in the book or even play as Kathleen Sanders in games based on Mass Effect: Ascension and Mass Effect: Retribution books. I guarantee you that Shepard will die at the end of ME3. I'm even thinking that no matter what you do, the Reapers will still win and the cycle will start again. In an interview they said that the third Mass Effect will not be the last, but it will be the last in the shepard saga, they did not say what the next ones would be about, just that this would be shepard's last gameWill Mass Effect 3 be the last Mass Effect or will it become like halo and start making prequels?
only problem i can see with doing games based on the books is how they tie into the ongoing story,



with revelation being the prequal, there would be too much the develpers would have to pigeon hole you into (ie,no matter what you wouldn't be able to stop saren)



I'm 1/2 through retribution, and we don't know what happens in ME3 yet....BUT....from what we seen so far, i definitely wouldn't mind kahlee and anderson having to go and rescue gillian from some sort of captivity, perhaps they then need to rescue shepherd (perhaps he's captured at the end of ME3), maybe the illusive man has a plan if something happens to him
